Grip vs Overgrip vs Undergrip: What's the Difference?
Ask three pickleball players what an "undergrip" is and you may get three different answers. Grip, overgrip and undergrip get used interchangeably in conversation, on product listings, and in a fair number of buying guides — but they describe different layers doing different jobs.
Getting this wrong is one of the most common equipment mistakes in the sport. Players who need a differently shaped handle buy a tackier one instead, and wonder why nothing improved.

The base layer: factory tape or replacement grip
The layer wrapped directly onto the bare paddle handle. Every paddle ships with one from the factory — often called base tape, factory tape or simply the grip.
It is typically a cushioned synthetic, somewhere in the region of 1.5 mm thick, and it does three things: gives you a surface to hold, absorbs a little shock, and adds a small amount of thickness to the raw handle underneath.
You replace it when it has gone hard, slick or compressed flat — once or twice a season for most regular players. Swapping it makes a noticeable difference to how the paddle feels. It makes almost no difference to the shape of the handle.
Replace it when: the factory tape is worn out, or you want more or less cushioning.
The overgrip: the wear layer
An overgrip is a thin tape — usually around 0.5 mm — wrapped over the top of everything else. It is the layer your hand actually touches.
Overgrips exist mainly because they are cheap and disposable. Rather than stripping and replacing a base layer every few weeks, you re-wrap an overgrip and leave everything underneath alone. They also let you tune tack and moisture handling without committing to a new base layer.
Two broad families are worth knowing about. Tacky overgrips use a soft, slightly sticky compound; they feel excellent for the first few sessions and then decline fairly quickly, especially in heat. Synthetic or perforated overgrips trade some of that initial stickiness for a more consistent feel over a longer life. Neither is objectively better — it depends on whether you would rather re-wrap often or re-wrap rarely.
An overgrip adds thickness evenly, all the way around the handle. That is worth underlining, because it is exactly what makes it the wrong tool for some problems.
Choose an overgrip when: you want more tack, better sweat handling, a fresh surface, or a very small uniform increase in handle size.
The undergrip: the shape layer
Here is where the terminology gets muddy. "Undergrip" is used two different ways in pickleball.
Sometimes it simply means a base layer — the thing underneath your overgrip. But increasingly it refers to a category of products that sit beneath the overgrip specifically in order to change the shape of the handle: inserts, ridges, sleeves and contoured layers.
That second meaning is the useful one, because it describes something the other layers cannot do. A base tape and an overgrip both wrap the handle uniformly. A shaping undergrip changes the handle's geometry — building up some areas and deliberately not others.
Choose a shaping undergrip when: the handle is too thin for your hand, you cannot find a consistent hand position, or you find yourself squeezing hard just to keep the paddle stable.

Can you use all three?
Yes, and most well set-up paddles do. A typical stack from the handle outward is: bare handle → base tape → shaping inserts → overgrip. Each layer is doing its own job, and none of them replaces another.

Thickness is not the same as shape
It is tempting to treat handle size as a single number — the circumference — and solve it by adding uniform layers until the number is right. Plenty of players build up a handle with two or three overgrips for exactly this reason.
It works, up to a point. A paddle handle is an extrusion, the same shape all the way down; a palm is closer to the shape of an egg. Uniform layers move the whole handle outwards but leave the cavity between the two exactly where it was. They cannot put support under the heel of the hand, along the index finger, or where a two-handed backhand sits.
If you have already stacked overgrips to reach the size you want and the paddle still does not feel settled in your hand, shape rather than thickness is probably what you are missing.
